How we rate

Each lender is scored out of 10 across five weighted factors: customer reviews (35%), loan terms & cost (25%), transparency (15%), NCR registration (15%), and customer support (10%). We are independent and never accept payment for higher rankings. Read full methodology →

Advertiser disclosure

You're our first priority. Every time.

We believe every South African should be able to make borrowing decisions with confidence. While we don't cover every credit provider in South Africa, we work hard to feature a wide range of NCR-registered lenders and provide objective editorial comparisons you can trust.

Affiliate compensation is one of several factors that may affect which products we highlight or where partner lenders appear within promotional placements. Other factors include loan availability, NCR registration status, customer review volume, and the editorial relevance of a lender to a specific guide or comparison page.

However, these factors do not influence our editors' opinions or our scores. Every rating is calculated using the same independent methodology applied to every lender, partner or not. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favourable reviews, hide negative customer feedback, or alter their score. If a partner performs poorly on customer reviews or NCR compliance, their rating reflects that.

Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • 0% interest on every purchase, so you pay back exactly what you spent
  • Flexible split options: pay once-off or in 2, 3 or 4 instalments
  • Quick online application with no lengthy paperwork
  • Wide merchant network covering fashion, tech, beauty, appliances and food
  • Available both online and in selected physical stores
  • Spending limits from R50 up to R10,000 suit a range of budgets
  • Highly rated by a large volume of verified customer reviews

Disadvantages

  • Fixed repayment term of 6 weeks offers no extended repayment flexibility
  • Maximum spend of R10,000 may not suit high-value purchases
  • Some users report difficulty logging in and not receiving OTPs
  • Customer support response times have drawn complaints, with limited phone contact options
  • Unauthorised debit allegations have appeared in recent reviews, which shoppers should monitor via their bank
  • Not a traditional personal loan, so it cannot be used for cash or non-retail needs
  • Only useful at Payflex partner merchants, limiting where you can shop

About Payflex

Payflex is a South African buy now, pay later (BNPL) service that lets shoppers split purchases into instalments without paying any interest. Instead of settling a full amount upfront, you pay 25% at checkout and spread the remaining balance over six weeks across up to four payments. Purchases range from R50 to R10,000, making Payflex suitable for everyday retail spending as well as larger basket items across fashion, beauty, tech, appliances and more.

The platform partners with a wide network of online and in-store merchants across South Africa, so you can use Payflex at checkout on many popular retail websites or at participating physical stores. Signing up takes only a few minutes, and once approved you can see your available Payflex spending limit before you shop.

Payflex positions itself as a cashflow tool rather than a traditional credit product. Because the repayment term is fixed at six weeks and the interest rate is 0%, the cost of using Payflex depends entirely on whether you make your instalments on time. It carries a strong customer satisfaction rating based on tens of thousands of independent reviews, though some users have reported frustrations with account access and customer support response times.

How Does Payflex Work?

1

Sign up on the Payflex website or app and receive a personalised spending limit within minutes. When you shop at a participating merchant, select Payflex at checkout and pay 25% of your cart total immediately. The remaining balance is split into up to three further automatic payments collected every two weeks over six weeks. All instalments are interest-free, so the total you repay equals exactly what you spent.

Requirements

Who Is Payflex Best For?

Payflex is well suited to employed or salaried South Africans who want to spread the cost of retail purchases without taking on interest-bearing debt. It works particularly well for shoppers who regularly buy from online retailers and prefer predictable, short-term payment schedules. Anyone who wants to manage monthly cashflow without committing to a long-term credit agreement will find the six-week, interest-free structure straightforward to budget around.

Is Payflex Safe & Legit?

Payflex operates in the South African market and its product structure falls within the buy now, pay later space, which is subject to evolving National Credit Act (NCA) oversight and National Credit Regulator (NCR) guidance. Payflex handles personal data and is expected to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Shoppers should review the debit authorisation carefully before signing up, as instalments are collected automatically from your bank account, and you should monitor your statements for any unexpected debits.

Registered Credit Provider (NCR)

Our Full Review

Payflex entered the South African market as one of the first local BNPL platforms and has grown into a well-recognised name among online shoppers. The core product is simple: split your purchase into up to four equal, interest-free payments over six weeks, with the first 25% paid at checkout. There are no hidden fees if you pay on time, and the 0% interest rate means Payflex costs you nothing extra provided you meet each instalment deadline.

The merchant network is a genuine strength. Payflex has partnered with retailers across fashion and apparel, beauty, tech and electronics, home goods, fitness and wellness, appliances, and food and beverage. The option to use Payflex in-store as well as online broadens its appeal beyond digital-only shoppers. For consumers who regularly shop across these categories, having a single BNPL account that works at multiple retailers adds real convenience.

From a credit terms perspective, the product is transparent. The minimum purchase is R50 and the maximum is R10,000, the term is fixed at 42 days, and the interest rate is 0%. There are no compounding charges and no monthly service fees described on the product. This makes Payflex easier to evaluate than traditional personal loans, where interest rates and initiation fees can significantly increase the total repayment amount.

Customer feedback is broadly positive, with a trust score of 4.6 based on over 82,000 reviews, which reflects strong satisfaction at scale. However, a portion of recent low-rated reviews highlights recurring issues around account access, OTP delivery failures, slow customer support and, in isolated cases, alleged unauthorised debits. Shoppers should ensure their contact details are current, review their DebiCheck mandates through their bank, and act quickly if they notice any unexpected account activity. Payflex encourages customers to report problems directly so they can be resolved.

Overall, Payflex is a solid option for South African consumers who want a short-term, interest-free way to spread retail spending without applying for a credit card or personal loan. It is not a substitute for longer-term borrowing needs, and the fixed six-week window means it suits people with predictable income rather than those already under financial strain. Used responsibly, it is one of the more transparent and cost-effective payment tools available to South African shoppers today.

Can't access account no matter what I do!

I have tried to use Payflex and the experience has been extremely frustrating. I cannot log into my account, I do not receive OTPs via SMS, and password reset emails never arrive. I then attempted to contact support, but the support form on the website does not submit, even after completing all required fields. This means there is currently no way to access my account or get assistance. My phone and email are working perfectly, so this appears to be an issue with Payflex’s systems. Please can someone from Payflex support contact me directly to resolve this.

I hereby report fraudulent activity by…

I hereby report fraudulent activity by Payflex, which resulted in an unauthorized debit of *R2700+* from my Nedbank account. The debit occurred in the early hours without my knowledge, and when I tried to perform transactions I discovered the money was gone. Nedbank confirmed that Payflex initiated the debit and stated they cannot reverse it. I have emailed Payflex detailing the fraudulent activity and requesting an immediate investigation, reversal of the debited amount, and assurance that security measures will be improved to prevent future unauthorized transactions. I expect Payflex to resolve the matter urgently and provide full restitution for the loss incurred.

Nightmare Service

It is an absolute nightmare trying to get anything resolved if a query does arise. You can expect to have weeks of late penalties added to your account which they won't reverse, even though they close tickets before sorting the issue out!

Paid in Full for an Order That Doesn’t Exist – Zero Support from Payflex

Go to Hellopeter.com to see a full picture of how poorly this company handles customers. Anyway, I am extremely disappointed with Payflex’s handling of my case. I attempted to make a purchase on Cotton On via Payflex. During checkout, the payment window was accidentally closed before I could confirm completion. I never received a confirmation email from Cotton On, and the order does not reflect in my Cotton On account. There is no order number, no invoice, and no record of a successful purchase on the retailer’s side. However, Payflex insists that the transaction was successful. I have now paid the full amount to Payflex for a purchase that does not exist. Despite submitting multiple queries, I receive the same generic response: “The purchase was successful,” and the ticket is closed without resolution. There is: No proof of a completed retailer order No order confirmation No way to escalate the issue No customer support phone number No meaningful investigation into the discrepancy Closing tickets without resolving the issue is not customer service. It is dismissive and unacceptable. At this point, I have paid for goods I have not received, and Payflex refuses to properly investigate or provide proof that Cotton On processed the order. I expect: Written proof of a valid order from Cotton On linked to this transaction, OR An immediate refund of the full amount paid. Consumers should not have to chase their own money when a payment gateway fails to reconcile a transaction properly. Until this is resolved, I cannot recommend Payflex to anyone.

poor customer service

I really do not understand the business model. I have been a client of Payflexfor years and I have never missed a payment, in actual fact I at times even pay some orders before the due date. This morning i tried to purchase something unaware that my limit was reduced. No communication what so ever,no reason given. Imagine the emabarrestment.

Easy to use and is available with most retailers🙂‍↕️.. I just wish that when you place an order and your chosen salary date has not passed yet it would automatically charge again on the following month so that it is 3 pay in 3 months instead of 3 payments in 2 months
